The fastest reliable test is the burn test: human hair burns to ash and smells like burnt hair, synthetic fibre melts into a hard bead and smells like plastic. If you would rather not set fire to anything, there are five other checks below that get you most of the way there. 1. The feel test

Run a section between your fingers, then do the same with a strand of your own hair.

Human hair feels soft and slightly irregular - individual strands vary in thickness, exactly as they do on a head. Synthetic fibre feels uniform, often slightly coarse or squeaky, and every strand is the same diameter.

What it proves: a good first indication, but soft synthetic fibre exists and cheap over-processed human hair can feel coarse. Use it alongside the others.

2. The shine test

Take the wig to a window in daylight and turn it.

Human hair reflects light unevenly, because the cuticle is irregular. Synthetic fibre reflects light in a uniform sheet, which reads as a hard, glassy shine - the effect most people mean when they say a wig "looks like a wig".

What it proves: quite a lot, and it is the test you can do without touching anything, which makes it useful when shopping. It works best in daylight; artificial light flattens the difference.

3. The smell test

Bring it close and smell the hair, not the cap.

Human hair has almost no smell of its own. Synthetic fibre often carries a faint chemical or plastic odour, particularly when new or when it has been stored in a sealed bag.

What it proves: useful when positive, inconclusive when negative. Synthetic fibre loses its smell after a few washes.

4. The tangle test

Comb through a section, then look at how the ends behave.

Human hair tangles like hair, and combs out. Synthetic fibre tangles at the ends and mats - and once it mats, it does not come back, because the fibre has been physically deformed rather than knotted.

What it proves: this is why a synthetic wig has a shorter life. It is not that the wig wears out - it is that the damage cannot be undone.

5. The heat test

Set a straightener to its lowest setting and pass it over a small section from underneath, where it will not show.

Human hair straightens. Synthetic fibre either does nothing at all or begins to frizz and melt.

Be careful with this one. If the wig is synthetic, low heat can permanently damage the section you tested. Use the lowest setting, test underneath, and stop the moment anything changes texture.

What it proves: close to conclusive - but it can cost you a small patch of wig.

6. The burn test

This is the definitive test. It is also destructive, so it goes last.

How to do it safely:

  1. Take a few strands only, from underneath at the nape where nothing will show, and cut them off. Do not hold flame near the wig itself.
  2. Hold the strands with tweezers or pliers, never with your fingers.
  3. Do it over a sink, in a ventilated room, away from anything flammable. Adults only.
  4. Touch a lighter flame to the very tip and take it away immediately.

Reading the result:

Human hair Synthetic

Smell Burnt hair - the same as singeing your own Burnt plastic

What it proves: everything. Nothing else is this reliable.

Do not do this on a wig you might return. Cutting strands off makes it non-returnable almost everywhere, ours included.

What about heat-friendly synthetic?

Some synthetic wigs are sold as heat-resistant or heat-friendly, and they complicate the heat test - they will take low heat without melting.

They do not complicate the burn test. Heat-friendly fibre is still plastic and still melts to a bead. The shine and feel tests also still work.

What about blends?

Some wigs mix human hair with synthetic fibre, usually to keep the price down. A blend can pass the feel and shine tests in some sections and fail in others.

If your results are inconsistent across different parts of the wig, that inconsistency is itself the answer. Test three separate places - crown, nape and one side - before concluding anything.

Why it matters what yours is made of

Mostly because it decides what you can do with it.

  • Heat styling - only on human hair, and only with a protectant.
  • Colour - synthetic fibre does not take hair dye at all. Human hair sometimes can, though we do not recommend it on a gray blend.
  • Repair - human hair that has gone dull or tangled can usually be washed back. Synthetic that has matted cannot.
  • Washing products - synthetic needs synthetic-specific products; human hair needs sulfate-free shampoo and conditioner on the lengths only.

Frequently asked questions

Can you tell from the price?
Only roughly. Human hair costs more to make, so a very cheap "human hair" wig is worth testing. But an expensive synthetic wig is not automatically fake - some well-made synthetic wigs cost more than poor human hair ones.

Does the burn test damage the wig?
Only the few strands you cut, and only if you cut them from underneath at the nape. Never hold a flame to hair still attached to the cap.

My wig was sold as human hair but feels synthetic. What now?
Run the burn test on a few strands. If it melts to a bead, contact the seller - a wig sold as human hair that is not is a straightforward misdescription, and most platforms have a process for it.

Can I tell from a photo online?
Rarely, and not reliably. The shine test sometimes shows up in photos taken with flash, where synthetic fibre reflects as a hard band. Everything else needs the wig in your hands.

Which lasts longer?
Human hair, roughly twice as long with regular wear - around 8 to 12 months against 4 to 6 for synthetic. The full comparison, including cost per wear, is here.
