You do not need glue to wear a lace front wig. A glueless cap holds with an adjustable strap, combs and an elastic band, and it takes under a minute to put on. Everything below is written for wearing one that way - through a normal day, a work week, a wedding, hot weather and travel.

What is a lace front wig, exactly?

"Lace front" describes how the hairline is built, not the style of the hair. A panel of fine lace sits at the front, with hairs individually knotted into it, so the hair looks like it is growing out of your scalp rather than starting at a hard edge.

Cap type Lace area What it lets you do
5x5 closure A 5 by 5 inch panel at the crown Part anywhere within that square - middle, side, or a small zigzag
13x4 frontal Ear to ear across the front hairline Part anywhere along the front, pull hair back from the face
13x6 Same width, deeper front to back Part further back, more convincing for slicked-back styles
Full lace The whole cap Part anywhere at all, including high ponytails

HD lace is a finer, thinner lace that sits closer to the skin and disappears more completely. It is more delicate to handle, which is the trade for how invisible it is.

Do you need glue?

No - and for most people we would rather you did not use it.

A glueless cap holds through three things working together: an adjustable strap at the nape, small combs inside the cap, and an elastic band around the perimeter. Set the strap once to your head, and after that the wig goes on like a hat.

Our standard cap is built to 22.5 inches in circumference, and the elastic and drawstring adapt it across roughly 21.5 to 24 inches. That range covers most people without any adhesive at all.

Why we push this: wig glue and tape are the single most common cause of scalp irritation from a wig, and repeated application and removal at the hairline is hard on the skin underneath. If your own edges are thin or you are wearing a wig because of hair loss, glueless is not a compromise - it is the better choice.

If you do use adhesive, patch test on your inner arm first, use a proper adhesive remover rather than pulling, and give your hairline days off.

Everyday wear

For daily wear, the goal is a wig you can put on without thinking about it.

  • Set the strap once, not every morning. Once it fits, it fits.
  • Move the part slightly from day to day. A part that sits in exactly the same place every day starts to look printed on, and the hairs at the parting wear faster.
  • Keep product light. A little mousse at the roots for lift, nothing heavy near the lace - product buildup at the hairline is what makes lace start to look grey and visible.
  • Tie it loosely at night or, better, take it off and put it on a stand.

Work and professional settings

A slightly structured style reads as deliberate, which is what you want in an office. A blunt bob, a side part with the ends turned under, or hair smoothed back with a low tuck all do this.

Two practical points. First, if you sit under overhead fluorescent lighting, that light is unforgiving on a shiny hairline - a very light dusting of translucent powder along the parting takes the shine off. Second, if you are on video calls, a webcam flattens depth, so a style with some volume at the crown photographs far better than a flat one.

Weddings, parties and long events

Long events are where weight matters, and weight is the number almost nobody publishes. From our own range, at the same 12 inch length:

  • 5x7 lace front: around 160 grams
  • Headband wig: around 120 grams
  • Each length step up adds roughly 10 grams

Forty grams is not much in your hand. Across a six-hour wedding in a warm room, it is the difference between forgetting you are wearing a wig and counting the minutes. If you are choosing between two wigs for a long day, pick the lighter cap.

One more thing worth knowing before you buy for a specific date: curly styles hang shorter than the label says. Our kinky curly falls about 4 inches shorter than the stated length and water wave about 2 inches. Straight hangs true. Buy the length up if you want it to reach where you are picturing.

Hot weather and outdoors

Heat is about the cap, not the hair. A lighter, more open cap breathes; a dense one does not.

  • Wear a hat in strong sun. UV fades gray and silver blends faster than any other colour, because there is no pigment to lose slowly.
  • Go shorter or lighter for summer. A bob or a headband wig is dramatically cooler than a long dense lace front.
  • Skip glue in heat. Sweat and adhesive together are the worst combination for both hold and skin.
  • Expect humidity to soften a style. Human hair drops in humidity for the same reason your own hair does. That is the trade for it looking real.

Travel

  • Do not fold it. Creases set into a cap and are hard to remove.
  • Pack it on a collapsible stand or stuffed with tissue, in a breathable bag, not sealed plastic - trapped moisture causes odour.
  • Carry it on. A wig in checked luggage that goes missing is a bad day.
  • Take a wide-tooth comb and a small bottle of leave-in. Nothing else is essential.

Three techniques that work on any lace front

Parting. Use the end of a rat-tail comb rather than your fingers - fingers make a wide, soft part that reads as a wig. A slightly off-centre part looks more natural than dead centre on almost everyone.

Volume at the crown. Lift at the roots with a volumising mousse, then tease very lightly underneath the top layer with a comb - underneath, so the smooth surface stays smooth. Do not tease at the lace itself; that is where knots loosen.

Bangs and fringes. A small round brush and low heat, shaping the fringe under and slightly to the side, then a light hold spray. Bangs are also the easiest way to soften a hairline you are not confident about - if you are new to wigs, a style with bangs is a forgiving place to start.

Updos and ponytails

What you can do depends on your cap. A 5x5 closure holds a low ponytail at the nape well but will show the cap edge if you pull it high. A 13x4 or 13x6 frontal lets you pull the hair back from the face. Only a full lace cap takes a genuinely high ponytail without showing anything.

For a low ponytail, gather at the nape and wrap a small section of hair around the base to hide the elastic. For an updo, twist or braid sections and pin them, working the pins into the wig hair rather than through the lace.

Keep the tension gentle. A tight updo on a glueless cap will lift it at the front, and a tight one on a glued cap pulls at your own hairline.

Accessories

Headbands, scarves and clips change a look in seconds and cost nothing. They also solve a specific problem: a headband or scarf across the front covers the hairline entirely, which is useful on a day when you are not confident about it or you are in harsh light.

What not to do

  • Do not add highlights or lowlights to a gray wig. The hair has already been processed to reach that colour and bleach on top of it makes it brittle. If you want more depth, choose a blend that has it built in - see Medium or Brown with Gray.
  • Do not cut the lace before you have worn it once. Trimmed lace cannot be put back. On many glueless caps you do not need to cut it at all.
  • Do not heat style near the lace. Heat at the knots loosens them, and that is where shedding starts.
  • Do not sleep in it. Friction at the crown is the fastest way to a wig that looks worn out at the part.

Frequently asked questions

Do I have to cut the lace on a lace front wig?
Not always. Many glueless caps come with the lace pre-cut or short enough to wear as it is. If yours needs trimming, wear it once first, then cut in small increments following the hairline shape - never in a straight line, and never all at once.

How do I stop the lace looking obvious?
Keep product off it, keep it clean, and dust the parting with a little translucent powder to kill shine. Most visible lace is not the wrong shade - it is buildup and shine.

Can I wear a lace front wig every day?
Yes. Glueless is what makes daily wear sustainable - there is no adhesive cycle on your skin. Give the wig a rest day when you can and store it on a stand.

Which cap should I buy for a wedding?
If you want the hair up or back from the face, a 13x4 frontal or full lace. If you are wearing it down, a 5x5 closure is lighter and less expensive and nobody will know the difference. Pick the lighter cap if the day is long.

What if the wig moves during the day?
Tighten the nape strap a notch. If it still shifts, the cap may be too large for you - our standard fits roughly 21.5 to 24 inches, and custom sizing is available in 21.5 inch petite and 23.5 inch large.
