How to Choose the Perfect Salt and Pepper Grey Wig for Your Skin Tone
Match your wig to your skin's undertone, not to how much gray you have. Cool undertones suit ashy, silver-heavy blends. Warm undertones suit grays with brown woven through. What is a salt and pepper wig?
A salt and pepper wig blends shades of grey, black and sometimes white to mimic the way hair greys naturally. It is not only for covering grey - many women choose it to embrace a chic, mature look deliberately. The difference between one that looks like your own hair and one that looks like a wig comes down to how the blend sits against your complexion.
How do you tell if your undertone is cool, warm or neutral?
Look at the veins on the inside of your wrist in natural daylight. This is the quickest reliable test.

A second check: think about how your skin reacts to sun. Skin that burns before it tans tends to be cool; skin that tans easily tends to be warm.
A third, if you are still unsure: hold silver jewellery against your skin, then gold. Whichever looks more natural points to your undertone - silver for cool, gold for warm.
Which grey suits cool undertones?
Ashy, silvery greys. Look for blends of white and charcoal, or silver-dominant mixes. These enhance the natural coolness of your complexion and give a striking, elegant result.
Avoid warm, golden greys. Against cool skin they tend to make the complexion look washed out rather than warmed.
Which grey suits warm undertones?
Greys with a hint of warmth in them. A blend of grey with subtle brown or beige running through it adds a glow to the face rather than draining it.
Avoid very cool, bluish greys. Against warm skin they clash rather than complement.
Which grey suits neutral undertones?
Both. Neutral undertones have the widest range, and can carry cool and warm greys equally well. Blends that contain both - silver mixed with soft brown - tend to be the most flattering, because they mirror the balance already in your skin.

Four things to check before you order
- Do the daylight photo test. Photograph yourself outside in natural light and look at it on your phone. If your grey is obvious without zooming in, you are further along than you think and should size up a shade. Our wigs also read slightly darker in person than in studio photos, so when torn between two, choose the lighter one.
- Check the cap fit. Our standard cap measures 22.5 inches with a breathable elastic band and adjustable drawstring. Measure by wrapping a soft tape from your natural hairline, above your ears and around the nape.
- Be honest about maintenance. Human hair greys need washing roughly every 7 to 10 wears with a sulfate-free shampoo, and air drying on a stand. Silver blends pick up warmth from hard water and sun faster than dark ones.
- Ask if you are unsure. Email service@soulladywigs.com with a daylight photo of your own hair and we will tell you which blend we would send. We would rather do that than have you order twice.
Frequently asked questions
Can I wear silver grey if I have warm undertones?
Yes, but choose a blend that keeps some brown in it rather than a pure silver. Medium Salt & Pepper or a brown-and-grey blend gives you the grey without the clash. What drains warm skin is a flat, cool silver with no depth.
Does my undertone change as I age?
Your undertone stays broadly the same, but your skin gets paler and loses some contrast, which is why a shade that suited you at 40 can look harsh at 60. If a wig that used to work now feels too stark, the fix is usually going one shade lighter, not darker.
What if I get it wrong?
We accept returns within 15 days of delivery on unused wigs in original condition, sent to our US warehouse. Email us before returning anything so we can confirm the process.
Should I match my eyebrows too?
Not exactly. A slight contrast between hair and brows looks more natural than an exact match. If your brows are still dark and you choose a silver-heavy blend, softening the brows a shade or two usually looks better than trying to match them to the hair.
