Menopause, Thinning Hair and Going Gray After 50: What Is Actually Happening
What is actually happening
If your parting looks wider than it used to, or your ponytail feels thinner in your hand, you are in very ordinary company. In a study of postmenopausal women, female pattern hair loss was found in about half of them. It is one of the most common changes of this decade of life, and one of the least talked about.
The mechanism is hormonal. As oestrogen falls, hair follicles become more sensitive to androgens, which are present in women too. Follicles shrink, individual strands grow finer, and each hair spends less time in its growing phase. The result is usually diffuse thinning across the crown and a wider parting, rather than the receding patches men get.
The part nobody mentions: most of it is mild. In the research, roughly seven in ten women affected had mild thinning, around two in ten moderate, and fewer than one in twenty severe. If you have been quietly assuming you are heading for the worst version of this, the numbers do not support that.
When it is worth getting checked
Not all hair thinning after 50 is menopause. Thyroid conditions, low iron, certain medications, and a few autoimmune conditions all cause hair loss, and they are treatable once identified. Menopause is the most likely explanation, but it is not the only one.
Worth a conversation with your doctor or a dermatologist if: the loss came on suddenly rather than gradually, it is patchy rather than spread out, your scalp is sore, itchy or visibly inflamed, or it arrived alongside fatigue, weight changes or other symptoms. A blood test rules a lot in or out quickly.
One worth knowing about specifically. There is a group of conditions called scarring alopecias, and the best known of them, frontal fibrosing alopecia, is notably more common in postmenopausal women - the average age of onset falls somewhere between the mid fifties and early sixties. It typically shows as the front hairline quietly receding, sometimes with loss of the eyebrows too.
The reason it is worth naming rather than filing under the general advice above: unlike ordinary menopausal thinning, this one destroys the follicle rather than shrinking it, so the loss is permanent once it has happened. Early treatment can stop it progressing. It can also look like ordinary thinning to someone who is not a specialist, which is the argument for seeing a dermatologist rather than only your GP.
None of this is meant to alarm you. Most thinning after 50 is the ordinary hormonal kind and most of it is mild. But a receding front hairline is the one pattern that deserves a specialist rather than a wait-and-see.
We sell wigs. We are not a substitute for that conversation, and a wig does not treat, prevent or slow hair loss. It changes what you see in the mirror while you sort out the rest, and for a lot of women that turns out to matter more than they expected.
What a wig actually does here
Two things, and it is worth separating them.
It covers. A well made human hair wig with a hand-tied lace parting reads as scalp at the part line, which is exactly where diffuse thinning shows most.
It removes a daily decision. Several women have told us the tiring part was not the thinning itself but the twenty minutes every morning spent arranging hair to hide it. That is the part a wig gives back.
What it does not do: regrow anything, protect what is underneath, or make the underlying change go away.
What to look for if your scalp is thinning or sensitive
The parting has to read as skin
This is the whole game. Our lace areas are 100% hand-tied, meaning each hair is knotted individually so it appears to grow from the scalp. Outside the lace the cap is machine-wefted, which is what gives it strength and shape. A machine-made parting is the single most common reason a wig looks like a wig.
Weight and breathability
A thinning scalp is often a more sensitive scalp. Shorter styles and bobs sit lighter than long dense units, and glueless caps let more air through than fully bonded ones. If you are wearing daily rather than occasionally, lighter wins.
Security without adhesive
Glue and tape are the wrong direction if your own hair is fragile. Our glueless caps hold with adjustable straps, an elastic band and removable combs, so nothing is stuck to your scalp and nothing needs solvent to come off.
Fit, without a size decision
The standard cap measures 22.5 inches around, and the straps, elastic band and combs take it from roughly 21.5 to 24 inches. There is no size to choose on a standard in-stock wig and no extra charge for it. Only genuinely petite or genuinely large heads need the made-to-order route, where every option and its cost is listed up front. The full fit guide is here.
Colour: match where you actually are
Hair thinning and hair greying often arrive in the same decade, which means you are making two decisions at once. They are separate decisions.
If your own regrowth is still mostly dark with silver coming through, a brown with gray blend will sit closest to what is already on your head. If you have stopped colouring and the silver is established, salt and pepper will look more natural than a dark wig fighting your roots. We compared the two here, and there is a separate guide to matching gray to your skin tone.
One practical note that catches people out: silver reads darker in person than it does on a screen. If you are between two shades, go one lighter.
Living with it day to day
Wash about every 7 to 10 wears, or roughly every two weeks with daily use. Cool water, sulfate-free shampoo, never wring it. With regular wear and proper care a human hair wig lasts 8 to 12 months. The full care routine is here.
If you are choosing a wavy or curly texture, remember it hangs higher than the number on the label. A 12 inch water wave sits roughly where a 10 inch straight wig would, because the hair is curled up rather than missing. We measured that side by side.
Common questions
Will wearing a wig make my thinning worse?
A glueless cap held by straps and combs does not pull on the hair the way tight braids or adhesive can. Keep your own hair clean and dry underneath, and give your scalp some air on days you are home.
Is hair loss during menopause permanent?
It varies, and it is a question for a doctor rather than for us. What we can say is that most cases in the research were mild, and that treatable causes like thyroid problems and low iron are worth ruling out first.
Will people be able to tell?
The parting is what gives a wig away, which is why the hand-tied lace area matters more than any other single feature.
How quickly can I have one?
