Two things that change how a colour looks
1. Lighting and screens
Hair colour shifts under different light, and every screen renders it differently. Warm indoor light pulls colours golden; daylight shows them truest; phone screens vary widely in calibration.
Judge a colour by a daylight photo, and treat product images as close rather than exact. Our wigs also read slightly darker in person than in studio photographs, so when you are torn between two shades, choose the lighter one.
2. Texture
Curly hair looks darker than straight hair in the same colour blend. Curl casts shadow on itself, so the same blend appears deeper. If you are comparing a curly wig to a straight one and the curly looks darker, that is texture, not a different colour.
The same effect is why curly styles look shorter than straight ones at the same labelled length.
Which colours are dyed and which are not
Being straight about this, because it is a fair question:
- Salt and pepper: not dyed. White hair blended with naturally dark hair. Nothing bleached, nothing toned.
- Natural black: not dyed.
- Brown with gray, browns, golds, reds and blondes: coloured. These shades cannot be reached by blending alone.
If undyed hair is why you are buying, stay with the salt and pepper range or natural black.
Frequently asked questions
Can I dye a wig after I receive it?
We do not recommend it, and on a gray wig we advise against it. Gray and white strands have little or no pigment, so dye grabs unevenly and goes patchy and bleach has nothing to lift. Changing shade is safer than changing the wig.
The colour looks different from the photo. Is that normal?
Some difference is normal - lighting, screen and texture all shift how a colour reads. A large difference is not. If what arrived does not look like what you ordered, email service@soulladywigs.com with a daylight photo and we will sort it out. Returns are accepted within 15 days of delivery.
How do I know which colour suits my skin?
Check your undertone: veins that look blue or purple mean cool skin, which suits ashy and silver blends; green veins mean warm skin, which suits colours with brown or gold in them. The full test is here.
Will the colour fade?
Coloured shades fade gradually with washing and sun. Salt and pepper does not fade in the same way, because no colour was deposited - but it can pick up warmth from hard water and sun. Care guide here.

Medium vs. Dark Salt & Pepper: which shade should you pick?
This is the question we get asked most. Don't try to guess a percentage — you can't count your own gray hairs. Instead, stand in front of a mirror in daylight and look at where your gray actually is.

The 10-second photo test: take a photo of yourself in natural daylight, then look at it on your phone. If your gray is obvious in the photo without zooming in, choose Medium. If you have to look closely to find it, choose Dark.

Which length should you order? (Read this before you choose)
Kinky curly hair does not hang at its stated length. On this texture the curls pull the hair up by about 4 inches. That is normal for curly human hair, and it is the single most common reason customers order the wrong size. The table below shows both numbers so you can choose with your eyes open.

For reference, our water wave textures shrink by about 2 inches rather than 4, and straight textures hang true to length. If you have worn a 14" straight wig before and liked the length, order 18" in this curly texture to get a similar drop.

Care and how long it lasts
- How often to wash: roughly every 7 to 10 wears, or every 2 weeks with daily use. Washing more often than this shortens the life of the curls.
- How to wash: use cool water and a sulfate-free shampoo. Squeeze gently downward — never scrub or wring the hair.
- Drying: air dry on a wig stand. Do not brush kinky curly hair while it is dry; detangle with your fingers or a wide-tooth comb while it is damp and conditioned.
- Expected life: with regular wear and proper care, 8 to 12 months.
- Coloring: we do not recommend re-dyeing an already-colored wig — a second dye process damages the hair. If you must, see a professional stylist.
Frequently asked questions
Should I choose Medium or Dark Salt & Pepper?
Look at where your gray is, not how much of it there is. If your gray is mostly at your temples and hairline and the rest still reads as dark, choose Dark. If your gray has spread past your temples into your part line and the top of your head, choose Medium. About 7 out of 10 customers choose Medium.
How much do the curls shrink?
About 4 inches on this kinky curly texture. A 14" wig hangs at roughly 10 inches, and a 12" hangs at roughly 8 inches. Our water wave textures shrink about 2 inches instead, and straight textures hang true to length. If in doubt, order one length longer.
How heavy is it? Will it feel heavy after a full day?
Between about 120 g (12") and 150 g (18"). For comparison, a similar 12" lace front wig weighs around 160 g. Because there is no adhesive and no lace, the weight sits evenly on the cap rather than pulling at your hairline, which is what most people actually notice by the end of a long day.
Will this work if my hairline or edges are thinning?
Yes, and this is one of the main reasons customers choose it. Nothing is glued or taped to your skin, and the headband sits over your own hairline rather than in front of it, so there is no tension on your edges and nothing to conceal. It is a common choice for women with traction alopecia or postpartum thinning.
Can I put this wig in a ponytail or bun?
You can gather it into a low, loose puff or half-up style. You cannot pull it into a high, tight ponytail, because the cap construction and headband would show. If a high ponytail is important to you, a full lace wig is the better choice.
How is this different from a V-part or lace front wig?
A headband wig is the fastest and most beginner-friendly of the three: no glue, no lace to cut, no leave-out, about 30 seconds to put on — but the headband is visible and you cannot part the hair. A V-part wig blends with a small section of your own hair for a natural part, but requires you to have hair to leave out. A lace front wig gives you an exposed, natural-looking hairline and full styling freedom, but takes longer to apply and usually involves adhesive.
Is it hot or uncomfortable in summer?
The cap is breathable and there is no adhesive sealing your scalp, which makes it noticeably cooler than a glued lace wig. On very hot days, choosing 12" or 14" instead of a longer length makes the biggest difference in comfort.
