Which actually costs less over a year?
This is the question that matters, and almost nobody answers it with numbers. The method is simple:
Cost per wear = price ÷ (months of life × times worn per month)
Worked through with the lifespans above, for someone wearing a wig most days:

Two things people forget when they do this maths. First, a human hair wig has ongoing costs - sulfate-free shampoo, a stand, occasional toning shampoo. Second, a synthetic wig cannot be restored once the fibre frizzes, whereas human hair can be washed back into shape many times.
If you wear a wig most days, run the numbers before assuming the cheaper sticker is the cheaper wig. If you wear one occasionally, do the same and you will probably find synthetic is right for you.
Natural look and feel
Human hair is real hair, so the texture, the way light hits it and the way it moves are not an approximation. Close up - and in photographs with flash - this is where the difference is most obvious, because synthetic fibre reflects light more uniformly than hair does and reads slightly glassy.
Where synthetic has closed the gap is at a distance and in good quality mid-range wigs. If nobody is looking at your hairline from two feet away, a good synthetic looks fine.
This matters more with gray than with any other colour. Gray and silver strands vary enormously in width and shine on a real head, and that irregularity is difficult to imitate in fibre. It is one reason our salt and pepper wigs are human hair only.
Styling freedom
Human hair can be cut, curled, straightened and blow dried. Keep irons under 300°F and use a heat protectant, but the freedom is real - one wig can be several looks.
Synthetic cannot be heat styled unless it is specifically sold as heat-friendly, and even then within a narrow range. What it does instead is hold its style permanently - wash it, let it dry, and the curl comes back exactly as it was. In humid weather that is a genuine advantage that human hair does not have. Human hair drops in humidity for the same reason your own hair does.
Comfort, weight and heat
A common claim is that human hair wigs "regulate temperature". They do not - hair is not a thermostat. What actually decides whether a wig is hot to wear is cap construction, density and weight.
Weight is measurable, and it is the number most sellers do not publish. For reference, from our own range:
- A 12 inch headband wig weighs around 120 grams
- A 12 inch 5x7 lace front of the same length is closer to 160 grams
- Each length step up adds roughly 10 grams
So a 40 gram difference sits between two wigs of identical length, purely because of how the cap is built. If heat and weight are your main concern, that difference will matter more to you than fibre type will. Headband wigs and glueless caps are the lightest constructions we make.
Scalp sensitivity: what actually causes irritation
Human hair wigs are sometimes marketed as hypoallergenic. That is not accurate, and it is worth being straight about because people with sensitive scalps make real decisions on this.
Irritation from a wig usually comes from one of these, none of which is the fibre itself:
- Cap materials - elastic, mesh, and in some caps latex
- Adhesives - wig glue and tape are a far more common trigger than any wig material
- Processing residue - human hair is bleached and dyed to reach a given colour, and residue can remain
- Friction and tension - a cap that is too tight, or a style pulled too hard at the temples
A glueless cap removes the single most common trigger, because there is no adhesive against the skin. Beyond that, no wig can be described as safe for every scalp. If you have a diagnosed skin condition, are in treatment, or have broken or healing skin, ask your doctor or dermatologist before choosing - not a wig seller.
Maintenance
Human hair takes more work. Washing every 7 to 10 wears with a sulfate-free shampoo, air drying on a stand, occasional toning if it is a silver blend. That is real time, and it is the honest cost of the look.
Synthetic takes almost none - a wash every 8 to 10 wears with a synthetic-specific product, and it dries back into its own shape without styling. For someone who wants to put on a wig and leave the house, that is a legitimate reason to choose it.
The difference is what happens when something goes wrong. A human hair wig that has gone dull or tangled can usually be washed, conditioned and brought back. A synthetic wig that has frizzed at the ends cannot - the fibre is permanently altered. Our full care routine is here.
Is either one environmentally better?
Being straight about this: neither wig is an environmentally clean product, and no wig is compostable as a unit.
Human hair is a natural fibre and biodegrades. But a wig is not only hair - the cap is lace, mesh and elastic, all synthetic, and the hair itself has been through bleaching and dyeing. Synthetic fibre is made from petrochemicals and does not biodegrade at all.
So human hair is the better of the two on materials, but the difference is smaller than "natural versus plastic" makes it sound, and we are not going to claim a carbon footprint figure we have not measured.
The lever that actually matters is simpler: a wig that lasts twice as long means half as many wigs. Buying one good unit and maintaining it does more than any material claim on a product page.
So which should you buy?
Choose human hair if you wear a wig most days, want it to pass close inspection, want to change the style, or are wearing gray - where fibre struggles most to look real.
Choose synthetic if you are wearing it occasionally, want zero maintenance, live somewhere humid and need the style to hold, or are buying your first wig and want to test whether wigs suit you before spending more.
That last case is common and completely reasonable. If you are not sure wigs are for you, do not start at the top of the market.
Frequently asked questions
Can you tell the difference between a human hair and synthetic wig in photos?
Usually only with flash or direct light, where synthetic fibre reflects more uniformly and can look glassy. In ordinary daylight photos a good synthetic holds up well.
How long does a synthetic wig last compared to human hair?
Worn regularly, roughly 4 to 6 months for synthetic and 8 to 12 months for human hair. Both last considerably longer worn occasionally, because lifespan is really counted in wears and washes rather than in calendar months.
Can I dye a wig?
Synthetic, no - fibre does not take hair dye. Human hair, sometimes, but we do not recommend it on a gray or salt and pepper wig. That hair has already been processed to reach its colour and a second chemical round leaves it brittle. Changing shade is safer than changing the wig.
Are human hair wigs heavier?
Not by fibre type - by cap construction and density. A lightweight human hair headband wig is lighter than a dense synthetic lace front. Ask for the gram weight rather than assuming.
